About Orcinus

Our Story

Orcinus Capital ("Orcinus") takes its name from the genus of the species Orcinus Orca, also commonly known as the "Killer Whale". The legendary Orca is recognizable by its black-and-white patterned body and can be found in all of the world's oceans. While it is respected as and understood to be a fearsome and highly intelligent apex predator, Orca pods also boast a highly sophisticated social structure which they use to their advantage in activities such as hunting and solving complex situations. The Orca is also common in myths and legends across many indigenous cultures around the world where it is featured in art, history, spirituality, and religion, taking on the role of ocean gods, spirits, and harbingers of good fortune.

The Latin name Orcinus translates as "belonging to Orcus". Orcus was a Roman god of the netherworld, and this genus name is likely a reference to the hunting prowess of the killer whale. However, in Latin and Greek mythology the netherworld or underground is also related to wealth, minerals, and the bounty that comes from within the Earth. Furthermore, the netherworld did not always necessarily have nefarious associations and Orcus was also known as an enforcer of promises and oaths. The founders of Orcinus Capital believed these aspects to be rather appropriate given the wide network of partnerships they have cultivated over their careers and their extensive experience and involvement with mining, natural resource, conservation, and environmental projects.
